Syringe
Directed by Talisha Elger

When a new breakthrough contraceptive promises to revolutionize female healthcare, a nursing student’s encounter with its more sinister consequences forces her to confront the true cost of progress in women's medicine.

"SYRINGE" emerges as a cinematic response to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling that endured for half a century, as well as to the severe lack of research surrounding female gynecological and reproductive health. As a psychological quasi-horror, my objective is to craft a film that not only captivates audiences but also serves as a commentary on the enduring struggles women face as they strive to attain agency over their reproductive choices. My affinity for the horror and thriller genres stems from their capacity to offer an alternative lens through which to address subjects that demand substantive discourse— a paradigm exemplified by Jordan Peele's "GET OUT" and paralleled by references such as "PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN", "SWALLOW", "TITANE" and "BLUE VELVET". Within the tapestry of "SYRINGE" thematic explorations encompass varying facets of femininity, the pervasive male gaze, patriarchal influences, female body autonomy, and above all, women's health.

After years of loneliness and routine, Adam, a disabled and quietly ambitious office worker, is reluctantly set up on a blind date that ends in disaster, but leads to an unexpected spark with Evie, a bold and witty bartender. As the two form a genuine connection, Evie reveals she’s transgender, forcing Adam to confront his own assumptions, stand up to his toxic father, and take a leap toward the creative dreams he’s long buried.
